Students in Mr. Boyd’s seventh-grade science class at Walker-Grant Middle School imagined cells as cities to show how their parts work. Each organelle took on a job based on its function. The nucleus, for example, might serve as city hall, while mitochondria provide power. Students then showed off their projects and explained their choices to classmates.

HMES Students Design Tools for Cleaner Water

Mrs. Lewis joined Ms. Floyd’s class at Hugh Mercer Elementary School for a hands-on STEM challenge focused on cleaner water. Using Clixo, students designed tools to remove trash and debris from the ocean, putting their creativity, problem-solving, and engineering skills to work.
 

JM Drama Club Puts on a Play in a Week

James Monroe High School Drama Club students wrote, cast, and performed their own plays for Play in a Week. They brought their productions from idea to stage in just seven days while raising money for VTA.
 

Scouts Lend a Hand at Hugh Mercer

On Saturday, September 19, Cub Scout Pack 802 and Scouts BSA Troop 170 cleaned up the landscaping around Hugh Mercer Elementary School’s sign on Cowan Boulevard. Pastor Anne Jones Martin of Christ Lutheran Church worked with Chris Bowers to secure a Thrivent Action Team Grant that paid for the mulch. Pack 802 is sponsored by the Hugh Mercer PTA, and Troop 170 is sponsored by St. George’s Episcopal Church. Many of the scouts are current or former Hugh Mercer students, making their work especially meaningful to the school community. Thank you to everyone who helped!

JM Staff Work “9 to 5” for Spirit Day

James Monroe High School faculty and staff celebrated a secret Dolly Parton spirit day on September 25, dressing for the occasion in a nod to her song “9 to 5.” They shared a reminder with students to be themselves, work hard, and spread kindness wherever they go.
