School Board Meeting Summary

The School Board held a Legislative Work Session and its regular meeting on Monday, September 14, 2026. The Board convened the work session at 5:30 PM, a closed meeting at 6:30 PM, followed by an open meeting at 7:30 PM.
5:30 Work Session
At the 5:30 Work Session, the Board discussed its legislative priorities with Del. Josh Cole.

Approval of the Agenda
The agenda was approved as amended, 1C – Approval of Board Member Attending Virtually, and 8C – Monthly Financial and Budget Update were removed.

Hearing of Citizens
The following citizens addressed the School Board: Justin Carter, Sylvie Rowe, Amelia Tschrin, Cyrus Linsner, and Tracey Greene. Their topics included the Special Engagement, instructional guide, graduation rate, the JMHS Drama Club overnight field trip request to go to Norfolk, VA to participate in the Virginia Theatre Association's Conference, and the Men of Purpose mentor group's purpose and request for an overnight field trip to Dallas, TX.

- Appointment of a Student Representative – The School Board Chair suggested forming a committee, consisting of the Vice Chair, superintendent, JM principal, and School Board Clerk, to develop and recommend to the Board a process and the procedure for appointing a student representative to the School Board. The committee will report out and the Board will vote at the October meeting

VSBA Webinar – Outsourcing Demystified
The webinar will be held on September 30, 2026.
NSBA Conference for Public Education Leaders
The conference will be held in Washington, DC on April 2-4, 2027.
Good of the Order
Members of the School Board and the Superintendent shared the following comments:
- Thanked the community for their support, staff for their presentations, and the citizens who spoke.
- Excited for how the school year opened and looking for the momentum to continue.
- The presentations and conversation focused on the work of the school division. Welcomed and thanked Dr. Jones for his presence.
- Thanked the Technology team for their work and appreciated the way FCPS was moving away from screens, improvement in transportation, and test scores.
- Thankful for the hard work of the team. Work needed to continue in the areas of CTE, universal preschool, parent initiatives. Appreciation of the Board and community for its support.

The meetings will begin at 6:30 PM and go immediately into Closed Session, followed by Public Session at 7:30 PM. Citizens may address the Board in person during the Public Comment portion of the meeting. If any citizen wishes to speak in person, please contact School Board Clerk Angela Chance Wilson at (540) 614-3819 up until 5:30 PM. on the day of the meeting, or via email at fcpsspeakers@cityschools.com to be included on the agenda. Citizens are asked to provide your name, address, and topic to be presented.
Citizens may request to speak by submitting a request form. The form may be submitted via email to fcpsspeakers@cityschools.com. Please be advised that your comments should be limited to what may be presented in a three-minute time-period. Please note that comments are no longer being read; if you wish to make your voice heard, please sign up to speak at the actual meeting.
