World Languages

We believe that every teacher is a teacher of language and plays a significant role in the language development and learning of each scholar. This includes the ability to express oneself through speaking, reading, writing, drawing, acting, etc. This also includes communication through different languages, including the languages of science, math, and the arts. All scholars are taught that competency in language is a valuable life skill and powerful tool. Acquisition of more than one language enriches mental and personal growth.

The Benefits of Being Proficient in More than One Language - The Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) cites several benefits in being proficient in more than one language, including:

·         Having a positive effect on intellectual growth.

·         Allowing more flexibility in thinking, greater sensitivity to language, and a better ear for listening.

·         Improving one’s understanding of their first language.

·         Increasing job opportunities in many careers in which a second language is a real asset.

·         Developing an understanding and appreciation of other cultures

Elementary (K - 5)

The certified world language teachers are collaboratively involved with implementation strategies in all Unit Planners and help facilitate international understanding. All scholars are taught that competency in language is a valuable life skill and powerful tool. Acquisition of more than one language enriches mental and personal growth.

World Language teachers instruct scholars through a specials rotation at the elementary schools. Our elementary language acquisition model is Language through Content (LTC) for grade K-5. This allows students to develop basic communicative skills in a language while reinforcing and enriching content in other disciplines. Lessons are linked to the grade level curriculum, school mission, learner profile attributes, and development of the mother tongue languages of our students.

Secondary (6 - 12)

Language Course Requirements for High School Graduation - Students must take at least three years of one language, or two years of two languages to satisfy Advanced Diploma requirements for high school graduation. Students are encouraged to take more than the minimum years required to reach a functional level of language proficiency for the workplace or future university study.

Language Programs Offered –

  • French
  • Spanish (Spanish for Fluent Speakers* course is available)
  • Latin*
  • Advanced Placement (AP)
  • World Language*

*Only offered at the High School.

**Sixth grade students cycle through Spanish and French. The enrollment into both languages gives students the opportunity to acquire a small degree of basic vocabulary and develop a limited range of cultural awareness through the two languages offered at Walker-Grant Middle School. This experience will assist students in deciding which language they would like to select to study the following year.
