Performance-based assessments (PBAs) are projects that usually involve hands-on, collaborative activities. They can be presented orally, in written form, or through a creative product that show student understanding of content and their ability to apply that knowledge. PBA’s are mandated for use in five SOL content areas as a substitute for previous SOL tests: Grade 3 History, Grade 3 Science, Grade 5 Writing, United States History to 1865, and United States History: 1865 to the Present.
Our PBA development and design teams have also accentuated our focus on inquiry-based learning and the IB philosophies of teaching and learning, which incorporate specific learning targets and supports the IB learner profile and the 5 C’s (critical thinking, creative thinking, collaboration, communication, and citizenship). As a result, PBA’s have been implemented and expanded far beyond the grade level SOL mandates and are a part of the teaching and learning process in Fredericksburg City Schools.
