A. Linwood Holton Governor's School is the Commonwealth's first completely virtual Governor's School. Daily, students in 18 school divisions and 37 high schools are provided a variety of dual enrollment courses using Canvas and a variety of other course specific software.

Fredericksburg City Public Schools is pleased to offer, for the first time, a Governor's School option for JMHS students. Our new partnership with the A. Linwood Holton Governor's School (ALHGS) began with the 2024-25 school year. This opportunity is for JMHS students who have completed their SOL requirements for graduation and are interested in college-level, rigorous coursework. The Governor's School offers these courses as online offerings. A minimum of a 3.2 GPA is required, among other admissions criteria.
ALHGS is a great option for students who are interested in:
Academic challenge
Dual Enrollment (DE) college credits
Superior preparation for post-secondary studies
Enhancing their academic resume for top colleges and universities
Joining a community of like-minded learners

WHAT:
HOW MUCH:
There is no cost to the student or family for these courses, but there are criteria to qualify for the program and to remain eligible for ALHGS.
WHO:
ALHGS is currently offered to our 11th and 12th grade students. These students remain on-site at the JMHS campus and take selected coursework (synchronous and asynchronous) and attend classes at JMHS for other courses needed for graduation requirements. These courses are chosen based on interest and as an a la carte model for the 2024-25 school year. A long-term goal is still in discussions offer this as a half-day program with coursework that would allow participating students to earn a General Certificate along with their High School Diploma by graduation.
STAFFING:
Students are supervised in a JMHS classroom with an assigned staff member who serves as the facilitator/coach in the room and provides academic support, as needed
