Community Guide To The Transition To Two K-5 Schools In Fredericksburg

Dear Fredericksburg Families, Students, Teachers & Staff, and Community Members:

Providing excellence in education is the mission that drives the Fredericksburg City Public Schools. As we emerge from a year when we have worked together to address the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, we must renew our focus on taking both immediate and long-term steps to ensure that our students, teachers, and staff have the space and facilities they need to be successful.

Our Enrollment, Capacity, and Expansion (ECE) Task Force has continued its work to plan for a new school to be built in the city. Knowing that opening a new school will take 3-5 years, the Internal FCPS Enrollment, Capacity, and Expansion Committee was tasked with identifying a short-term plan to ease the impacts of overcrowding on our elementary-age students in grades Kindergarten through 5.

The School Board’s decision on April 28 to make both Hugh Mercer and Lafayette K-5 schools beginning with the 2021-2022 school year will have a major impact on our families and teachers. I fully understand that this represents a significant change for our city. I strongly believe that this is the best near-term solution to support excellent education for our students and a better working environment for our teachers and staff.

This page will serve as a clearinghouse for information about the move to two K-5 elementary schools as it is available. We are here to help you through this transition and are excited for the potential it offers our students as we approach the coming school year. I want to thank our families for the support they have shown our schools throughout this process and our teachers for their commitment to educating Fredericksburg’s youth. No matter what building we are in, we are all working toward the same mission of supporting our Fredericksburg youth.

Sincerely,

Dr. Marceline Catlett
Superintendent, Fredericksburg City Public Schools
